Adoptable Pets: Pets need emergency preparation, too

For those of us who were in denial prior to last weeks disaster in Japan, surely we are now reminded and awakened to the possibility of catastrophe.

The experts say that similar earthquake occurrences will visit the Bay Area, and only the when? is in question. So as we prepare, it is essential that we keep our pets in mind so that in emergency, we can quickly grab pre-packed provisions for all the household members. Include the following for pets in order to lessen last-minute confusion:

Sealed food and bottled water; a collapsible bowl; any medications your pet may need; a blanket or towel; and a crate and/or cat carrier. We suggest that you have a harness with easy closures on hand for last-minute grabs.

In a disaster aftermath, there are always pets found on roofs, or wandering aimlessly in confusion and it can take days for rescuers to gather them together for identification. Therefore, it is imperative that tags, microchips or other ID be on the pet. Keep a collar on all pets to aid in any eventuality, be it disaster, theft or wandering off and you will retrieve your pet much sooner.

On April 9, the Humane Society of Alameda, always generous with their time and money, is hosting an event providing FREE microchips for your pets at the Pet Food Express in the Bridgeside Shopping Center on Blanding Avenue. Be there with your leashed dog or crated cat between 9 am and 11:30 am

The Caucus: House Votes to Cut Off Money for NPR

The House voted on Thursday to cut off funding for National Public Radio, with Democrats and Republicans fiercely divided over both the content of the bill and the manner in which it was brought to the floor.

Under the measure, sponsored by Representative Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado, stations could not buy programming from NPR or any other source using the $22 million the stations receive from the Treasury for that purpose. Local NPR stations would be able to use federal funds for operating expenses, but not content.

The time has come for us to claw back this money, said Representative Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee.

This was the second time that the House has moved to defund NPR; a rider to take away its public monies was attached to a short-term spending bill passed last month by the House, but the measure ultimately failed in the Senate. Thursdays measure, which House Republicans rushed to the floor before a one-week recess begins, passed 228 to 192, with a handful of Republicans voting no.

The bill is almost certain to fail in the Senate, should it even reach the floor there. In that chamber, which is controlled by Democrats, members of both parties have expressed skepticism about cutting off NPR because it remains popular among many of their constituents.

The organization, in the cross hairs of Republican lawmakers for years, came under intense fire recently with the release of a video that showed one of its fund-raising executives criticizing members of the Tea Party. Last year, NPR made headlines over the hasty firing of the commentator Juan Williams, for remarks he made on Fox News about fearing Muslims at airports.

Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the Republican majority leader, said the revelations of the video, made by a conservative activist who posed as a potential NPR donor, “makes clear that taxpayer dollars should no longer be appropriated to NPR.”

Democrats said politics, not fiscal austerity, drove the bill. “Why are we wasting valuable floor time on an ideological battle?” said Representative Louise Slaughter of New York.

The House debated the bill, and the procedure by which it was brought to the floor, for several hours Thursday, with Republicans arguing that NPR should be able to sustain itself through private donations, and Democrats countering that the cut would have a negligible impact on debt reduction or the nation’s fiscal problems. They further accused Republicans of ignoring joblessness to instead attack Car Talk, an NPR show.

Mr. Lamborn said that while he personally enjoyed NPR, “I have long believed it can stand on its own.” He added in a speech on the floor: “I want NPR to grow on its own, I want to see it thrive. Just remove taxpayers from the equation.”

Representative Peter Welch, a Democrat from Vermont, said he saluted Republicans for trying to cut the federal budget, but added: “Why have a proposal that destroys institutions? Vermont Public Radio is the link between 251 towns, cities and villages in the state of Vermont. Farmers listen to it in their barns, parents listen to it on their way to bringing their kids to school, people at work listen to it for the weather reports and it welds together the political discussion in the state of Vermont, which is vibrant, which is varied, which has people with different points of view having a common reference point.”

Democrats also objected to the manner in which the bill was brought to the floor. On Wednesday, the House Rules Committee held an emergency hearing to expedite the bill, and it went to the floor under a so-called closed rule, which does not allow for amendments, counter to the promise of more openness made by Speaker John Boehner.
Republicans pointed out that the seven-page bill had already been debated when the larger spending bill was considered, and that the stand-alone measure was expedited so that the Republican-controlled House could be clear on its financing position.

During parliamentary inquiry into how much time was required to pass between the filing of the bill and the vote, there was booing, and Representative Ted Poe, who was presiding over the House floor, was forced to slam his gavel.

Before the vote, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee called on supporters for money. In a fund-raising e-mail on Wednesday, the committee chairman, Steve Israel, wrote: We can’t let this outrage go unchallenged. Republicans and their right-wing media backers are gearing up for this fight, and they’re hoping grass-roots Democrats like you will stay on the sidelines.”

Protect your pets from springtime hazards

The birds are chirping; there’s a gentle breeze and the warm sun is shining. Spring is officially here.

What a beautiful time of year this is. Springtime triggers a lot of fun and exciting outdoor events such as hiking, gardening, fishing and playing outside with the kids and the family dog. It’s important to keep your pets safe during this time of year and as we get closer to summer. There are many steps you can take now to help protect your pet for the future.

Fleas and ticks are prominent in the spring and summer. There are many different products you can use to prevent these pesky pests. Flea and tick collars, spray and monthly treatments can be found at your local veterinarian’s office, or even at pet supply stores.

Vaccines are another important step for your pets’ safety. There are many different vaccines out there that may be beneficial for your pet. Aside from their annual rabies vaccines and 4-in-1(or whatever you and your vet decide to use), there are rattlesnake and giardia vaccines that may be ideal if you hike, camp, travel and go to the water often. There are also Lyme vaccines and heartworm treatment that you can keep your pet current on.

Spring also brings the blooming of beautiful flowers. Though they are gorgeous and smell wonderful, they may be hazardous to your pets. Below is a list of some of the flowers that are poisonous to pets.

  1. As lovely as the clematis is,

this can cause severe illness

and even death.

  1. Springtime crocus fall in the

fatal category.

  1. Tall and regal looking death

camas can be deadly to your

canine.

  1. Azalea is on the list to

watch around your dog since

it can be fatal if swallowed.

  1. Another springtime flower is

the deadly daffodil.

  1. If you can remember the

word lily, you can steer your

dog away from most of those

species. Day lily, tiger lily,

Easter lily, trumpet lily and

lily of the valley are all

poisonous and could be fatal

if swallowed.

  1. Narcissus are not

something you can let your

dog eat, since they are on

the do not eat list too.

  1. Most rhododendrons can be

low enough to the ground

that a dog could be tempted

to eat the flowers; however

they are not to be eaten by

canines either.

  1. Foxglove is a lovely cone

shaped cluster and highly off

limits to dogs for eating.

  1. As lovely as Morning Glory

is, it is off limits to dogs for

consumption.

Many flowers cause mild gastrointestinal upset without actually poisoning your canine.  Either illness or death can be circumvented by education of flora that can be dangerous to your dogs’ health.

No matter where you live, call the HOT LINE at the ASPCA:  1-888-426-4435 or your local veterinarian. If you believe your dog has swallowed anything that has caused some vomiting or other symptoms, consult with your vet as soon as possible.  The longer you wait, the less likely the available time for something to be done to help your pet will be.

Just because the item is not listed on this article, does not mean it cannot cause distress to your dog. An alert and watchful pet owner can sometimes pick up a lethargic dog behavior or a sickly look in the dog’s eyes.  This observation needs a quick trip to the veterinarian. If you know what was eaten, bring the name or part of the plant with you to help the vet.

Now it’s time to meet some of the wonderful pets available for adoption at the HSCAZ animal shelter. To learn more, come to the shelter at 812 S. McLane Road, call us at (928) 474-5590 or visit our website: humane societycentralaz.org.

Sleeping with your pets can be unhealthy

Sleeping with your pets can be unhealthy

Do you let your pet sleep with you? It could be hazardous to your health. Sound crazy? A new study says a surprising number of people allow their pets to curl up with them, and it could actually be risky. But are the new findings overblown? What dangers could you face from close contact with your pets?

In a nightly ritual, Chrissy Carew and her five dogs all bunk up together for the night. ?I consider them full-fledged members of our family,? she says.

A new survey shows 56 percent of dog owners in the US let their dogs sleep next to them. But researchers say that could lead to some real problems.?Sometimes we forget that they aren?t our children. They are pets and also they have their own life and there are diseases that can be transmitted,? says veterinarian Bruno Chomel of the University of California?s School of Veterinary Medicine.

Chomel is one of the lead authors of the study just published by the Centers for Disease Control. Researchers tracked people who had close contact with their dogs and cats, either sleeping next to their pet or allowing their animal to lick and kiss them.

In rare instances, some caught illnesses like the plague, rabies, antibiotic-resistant infections; meningitis; and cat-scratch fever. Others picked up ringworm and intestinal parasites. Medical experts say that one of the most important things a pet owner can do is to keep your dog or cat free of fleas. The insects bite and could spread disease. daily times monitor

Duran Duran by David Lynch: Romance, Redemption and Rocking Good Fun

Eighties New Romanticists Duran Duran started their 2011 push to promote their new album All You Need Is Now with a well-received appearance at SXSW. After Austin, the world: their March 23rd concert from the exotic Club Mayan in downtown LA was directed by film master David Lynch, who festooned his live feed with art, including Barbies and barbeques. The Lynch-Duran Duran collaboration was beamed around the planet by Vevo webstream. Four original band members are performing this time. Frontman Simon Le Bon, keyboardist Nick Rhodes, bassist John Taylor, and drummer Roger Taylor submitted themselves to the ideas of star producer Mark Ronson (of Amy Winehouse Back in Black fame and his own endlessly inventive solo work as Mark Ronson and the Business International) who appeared with them live at the Mayan. Other great guests included Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance harmonizing on Planet Earth, Kelis, and Gossips Beth Ditto, who spoke to Spinner recently about her new solo EP.

DD superfan Ronson sought to help them make an album worthy of comparison to their 1980s classics, and the band kicked things off at The Mayan with this new material that sounds both fresh and familiar. Ronsons expertise in getting stellar performances from vocalists like Winehouse, Lily Allen, Boy George, and many others, has had a wonderful effect on the expressiveness and command in Le Bons indelible voice. Ronson also determined the direction of the albums content. He urged them to make it about girls.

New Romantic/New Wave music obsesses over what punk and rap/hip-hop do not. Unabashed ballads, rockers and dance tunes are filled with oceanic yearning for love and romance. Nick Rhodes is the kind of lyricist who would give everything to caress his loved ones sleepy head. Song after song confesses dreamy attraction for the archetypal mesmerizing woman. Sexuality is represented as a transcendent encounter which carries the songwriter or listener places far away from the Ordinary World, which one returns to with reluctance when the love affair or the song ends. Duran Duran has always dressed up for its date with extreme yearning. Exquisite suits and guyliner symbolize their break with the non-glamorous masculinities of other musical genres. Alice Echolss cool book, Hot Stuff: Disco and the Remaking of American Culture gives a deep read on the critical drubbing artists associated with dance music receive in our ordinary world, penalized for devoting themselves to an art with sonic cycles and plateaus that express female pleasure. She notes Time magazine counting 22, and the BBC locating 23, expressions of female orgasm in Donna Summers 1975 hit Love to Love You, Baby, and rock critics have thumbed their noses at every single one of them. For thirty years, Duran Durans guys have been lovers, not fighters, and, like other bands influenced by the glam look of Roxy Music, theyve endured incomprehension and ridicule for their devotion to beauty. Theyve also sold millions upon millions of records, and held onto a huge number of passionate fans.

Duran Duran represents an uncommon response to the overwhelming sexually liberated woman born from 1970s feminism: theirs is music that admits to a delight in being overwhelmed. Le Bon sounds convincingly besotted on new tracks Girl Panic and Too Bad Youre So Beautiful, and credibly fearful of rejection in lines like, a single random meeting/with your eyes, and now Im beaten and now I sense your mission/is my coming demolition. Ronson insists that vocalists register real emotion, and Le Bon delivers.

The eighties were full of demanding women, from Chrissie Hyndes Brass in Pocket to Madonna singing Boy, youve got to prove your love to me on her early hit Into the Groove and The Pointer Sisters requiring that a guy Jump/For [My] Love, then ordering him to use a Slow Hand, even though Hes So Shy. The Waitresses worked the extended taunt in I Know What Boys Like: I make them want me/I like to tease them/They want to touch me/I never let them… They get so angry/like pouty children/denied their candy/I laugh right at them… / Nah, Nah, Nah, Nah. Punk-funk master Rick James (Rick James!) wasnt running scared from the (SuperFreak) kind of girl you read about/in New Wave magazines but when you peruse an anthology of other 1980s hits, you hear many males sounding vulnerable to powers of the liberated female. The reaction of A Flock of Seagulls was I Ran. Mr. Mister experienced Broken Wings and Thomas Dolby confessed that She Blinded Me With Science.

Newcomers to Duran Durans oeuvre may not know the bands name derives from a character in Roger Vadims film Barbarella, starring Jane Fonda in the title role. DDs utterly successful, sensuous new album and killer live performances should send fans the ages of Ditto, Way and Kelis to the shows on their current tour as well as to some fun nights at home watching Barbarella, DDs vids that ruled MTV, all of Lynchs films, and hearing Lynchs own eighties-inspired dance music. Grab a copy of Echols book and give some thought to the subtext of all the music that led up to Duran Duran, why it suffers from — and yet survives — snootiness from critics, and why artist fans as cool as Ronson or Ditto or Lynch think it is dream after dream coming true.
