Closed, Says Google, but Shops’ Signs Say Open

After weeks of trying, the owner of Macadamia Meadows Farm can’t scrub Google’s “permanently closed” label.

Not in the real world, where it is thriving. Coffee Rules Lounge was listed for a few days as “permanently closed” on Google Maps. During that time, anyone searching for a latte on a smartphone, for instance, would have assumed the store was a goner.

“We’re not far from Interstate 70,” said Mr. Rule, “and I have no doubt that a lot of people running up and down that highway just skipped us.”

In recent months, plenty of perfectly healthy businesses across the country have expired — sometimes for hours, other times for weeks — though only in the online realm cataloged and curated by Google. The reason is that it is surprisingly easy to report a business as closed in Google Places, the search giant’s version of the local Yellow Pages.

On Google Places, a typical listing has the address of a business, a description provided by the owner and links to photos, reviews and Google Maps. It also has a section titled “Report a problem” and one of the problems to report is “this place is permanently closed.” If enough users click it, the business is labeled “reportedly closed” and later, pending a review by Google, “permanently closed.” Google was tight-lipped about its review methods and would not discuss them.

Google’s rivals, like Bing and Yahoo, have versions of Places — called Bing Local and Yahoo Local — and these let users report a business as closed. But neither has anything close to Google’s traffic, which means they are the scene of far less mischief.

When Google created Places it had an eminently sensible type of crowd-sourcing in mind. The site contains millions of listings, and when owners close without updating their profile, the job falls to customers to keep information current. But like any open system, this one can be abused. Search engine consultants say that “closing” a business on Google has become an increasingly common tactic among unscrupulous competitors.

“I’d say that it was in June that we started to see a big uptick in complaints about this in online forums,” said Linda Buquet of Catalyst eMarketing in San Marcos, Calif. “It might be that a number of consultants are now offering services like ‘nuke your competitor’ in Google Places. But it could just be a competitor, acting alone.”

Nobody is quite sure how prevalent these sham closings have become. In Google Forums, where users can pose questions about Google’s features, there are dozens of exasperated postings like this one, written in July: “Help! My business is listed ‘PERMANENTLY CLOSED’ on Google Maps even though it has always been open! Help!”

But this most likely represents a fraction of viable businesses that have been cyberpadlocked. Many owners, search consultants say, have no idea that they’ve been shuttered online, and many others fix the problem without asking anyone how to solve it.

A Google spokesman, Gabriel Stricker, declined to comment on whether the company kept a running tally of fraudulent closings. But he said Google was aware of the issue and was already working on changes, which will be adopted in coming days, to prevent what he called “malicious or incorrect labeling.”

“We know that accurate listings on Google Maps are an important tool for many business owners,” he wrote in an e-mail. “We take reports of spam and abuse very seriously and do our best to ensure the accuracy of a listing before updating it.”

If there is a historical antecedent to “closing” a company on Google, it is a dirty trick that was fairly common in 19th-century politics, wherein supporters of a candidate would spread rumors that his opponent was dead. This didn’t always work — Thomas Jefferson prevailed in the election of 1800, despite reports of his demise — but the Internet corollary can have terrible consequences.

“For weeks, our bookings for September have been far lower than normal and we were wondering why,” said Charlene Cowan, who owns and operates Macadamia Meadows Farm, a bed-and-breakfast in Naalehu, Hawaii, which has been tagged as “permanently closed” for weeks.  “I can’t imagine a customer is behind this — if someone doesn’t like their visit here, they’d complain on TripAdvisor. I can’t prove it, but this seems like something a competitor did.”

The owner of a closed business, and customers who know better, can click on a button marked “not true,” which appears by all “reportedly closed” and “permanently closed” listings. In some instances, owners say, a business will “open” shortly thereafter. But other owners, like Ms. Cowan, say that the button doesn’t work, or that it takes a week to have any effect. Still others say that immediately after clicking the “not true” button, their business is immediately “closed” again.

“In the last four days, I’ve hit that ‘not true’ button every six to eight hours,” said Daniel Navejas of RBI Divorce Lawyers of El Paso. “It’s getting old.”

In mid-August, a search consultant and blogger named Mike Blumenthal was so rankled by what he considered Google’s cavalier attitude to closings on Google that he committed an act of online disobedience: He “closed” Google’s offices in Mountain View, Calif. For a brief period, Google itself was “reportedly closed,” according to Places. “I did it to point out how annoying this is when it happens,” he said.

On Aug. 15, Mr. Blumenthal posted a screen shot of Google’s Places page “reportedly closed,” noting that it took just two people — him and a friend — to pull off this stunt. It seemed to get the company’s attention. At least one change to closings on Places has already been made. Since late August, a business that is newly tagged “permanently closed,” receives an alert via e-mail from Google, informing the business owner of the change.

Mr. Blumenthal describes this as a good start, but hardly enough. “The company really ought to give a heads-up when a business is tagged ‘reportedly closed,’ ” because those words alone are often enough to put off customers, he said. “Google doesn’t understand how much fear and discomfort businesses have about this. One company gets to decide if you’re open or closed in the online world.”

Although they allow users to report a business as closed, Bing Local and Yahoo Local don’t yet seem to have as many problems.

Case in point: Macadamia Meadows Farm, that bed-and-breakfast in Hawaii, is open for business, according to both Bing Local and Yahoo Local. But after weeks of e-mails and even a call or two to Mountain View, its owner, Ms. Cowan, can’t scrub the “permanently closed” label from Google Places.

“A few days ago, I put on our Places page that we’re running a special,” she said. “I just hope people read that and think ‘Well, they must actually be open.’ ”

Shops may replace eyesore

NORTH ATTLEBORO – Instead of the crumbling Balfour factory building and its weedy parking lot, the planning board envisions a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood of condominiums or apartments with shops lining the street.

The planning board laid out its vision for the future of the property in a public hearing Tuesday on its proposed transit-oriented bylaw.

The Balfour property, owned by North Attleboro Commerce Center LLC and located at 21 East Street, is at the center of the 14-acre districts boundaries, which runs from Holbrook Avenue to South Washington Street to Elm Street to Route 1.

The bylaw would create a new option for the areas developers by encouraging creation of a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with a bus transit center.

The facility would be run by the Greater Attleboro Taunton Regional Transit Authority to bring commuters to a nearby train station or along bus routes running from Franklin or Attleboro.

Retail shops such as barbershops, a daycare center or even a gym are envisioned for the lower floor.

We want people to walk more and use their cars less, Town Planner Mary Burgess said. Were trying to build a community. Were trying to build a neighborhood.

The development would have sidewalks at least 5 feet wide and street furniture such as benches and public art to promote walking.

Few comments were received on the proposal, which have to be approved at a future town meeting, but most focused on two aspects of the plan: high-density housing and busing.

Buildings in the district could be a maximum of six stories and would have to fit in with the character of downtown. The maximum number of units per acre of property would be 35.

Burgess said that figure is lower than other downtown properties. Pace Plaza has 60 units per acre while 22 South Washington St. has 75 units per acre.

Has there been any study of the impact of high-density housing on the schools, on the roads and on the water and sewer system? asked Betsy Bobkaitis of Broadway.

Planning board Chairman Richard McCarthy the board would consider the impact as part of its deliberations for granting a special permit for new developments within the district.

Other residents questioned the plan for adding busing, and whether the development would still be upscale if busing was attached.

Planning board member Richard Houle explained that young professionals might be interested in living in a development with access to commuter rail and no need to drive around in a car. He said that many in their 20s and 30s who grew up in town are finding they are priced out of the housing market.

These kids cant afford to live in the town we live in, he said.

The bylaw does have provisions for the development if busing is not included. Instead, developers would be required to have a public green or parking for municipal use on the site.

The town is being assisted with the creation of the new bylaw through a technical assistance grant provided by the Southeastern Regional Planning and Development District.

You can set up boundaries for your pet, like your backyard or your block. If your dog leaves that safe zone, you’ll get a text message or an alert via e-mail. You can then see their location on a map via the Tagg Website. There’s also an accompanying mobile app for Android and iOs so you can track their location on-the-go.

Tagg will work with cats, too, but only cats over 10 pounds. You should be aware, however, that most cat collars have a safety, break-away feature that releases the collar if they get it stuck on something (to prevent them from choking). Also, the 10 pound rule applies to dogs, too. The tracker is simply too heavy for a teacup Chihuahua or other tiny four-legged friends.

The service is getting a lot of buzz in the pet industry and especially from animal shelters. If you adopted your pet from a shelter, there’s a likely chance it was microchipped too. The microchip is an excellent way for identifying found pets at shelters, but many pet owners forget to register their pets’ chips so it is hard to identify them. The Tagg tracker can help pet owners find their pets before they end up in the shelters.

Shops closing down by thousands in Greek crisis

Generations of merchants set up successful businesses in the commercial triangle of Athens, a stones throw from the central Syntagma Square, the flash point of bloody anti-austerity protests that erupted just over two months ago but in better times a popular tourist site.

Now, the mood among shopkeepers in the once-vibrant area, enclosed by the capitals three main squares, is somber.

Tens of thousands of small businesses, which make up a big chunk of the Greek economy, have closed since the government secured a bailout package worth about $150 billion from international lenders in exchange for promises of painful austerity measures.

There is no helping hand (from the government), Lizardos said. There is only one hand, the one that presses on our heads and pushes us further to the ground.

The walls of his shop are full of photographs from a time when staff worked into the night to keep up with demand for gold jewelry from Greeks, who have treasured it as part of their culture for centuries.

Today, the workshop is run by four people, including Lizardos cousin and uncle, who together with his father opened the business five decades ago. Rising gold prices and high taxes have made it too expensive to run the workshop, and he cannot afford to buy stock to keep the business running.

If I close down my businesses, what will I do now at 44? said Lizardos, echoing the plight of many small-business owners throughout Greece.

His wife is half-American, and the family is considering moving to the United States, where he believes his teenage daughters would have a better future.

When I got married, I stayed for this reason, not to abandon what my father worked for all those years, he said.

Our customers are not strangers; they are people you see in the market every day: the civil servant, the grocer, the electrician. Some of them are priests, but even they have stopped buying. They dont want to provoke people by appearing to be extravagant.

Violent street protests against tax increases and salary cuts have driven many Athenians from the city center. A police bus is permanently on standby on the corner of Lizardos street.

The austerity measures and the protests have cast a shadow over small businesses in the city, with demonstrations alone costing them about four working hours a day, trade bodies said.

In the Athens area, more than 20 percent of shops have closed since 2010, according to the ESEE retail federation.

Closures likely to continue

Closing down or declaring bankruptcy is not easy, so many businesses simply pull down their shutters, and debts start to pile up, according to ESEE.

Air Methods Corporation Confirms Fatal Accident in Missouri

DENVER, Aug 27, 2011 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) –
Air Methods Corporation reported that a Eurocopter AS350 helicopter based in St. Joseph, Missouri crashed Friday, August 26, 2011 at approximately
6:41 p.m. CDT en route to Liberty, Missouri. The paramedic, flight nurse, pilot and patient on board the aircraft received fatal injuries. The aircraft was operated in support of the Company’s LifeNet of the Heartland program.

Fight film and fiery feast make date night fun

Town is one of worst for empty shops

HARTLEPOOL was today revealed as one of the worst towns in the country for its number of empty shops.

It ranks third-worst of Great Britain’s medium-sized towns for vacancy rates.

The Shop Vacancy Report, carried out by retail analysts the Local Data Company, showed 27.9 per cent of all Hartlepool’s town centre shops were empty during the survey conducted between January and June this year.

Stockton was the fourth-worst performer among Great Britain’s large town centres, with 27.4 per cent of its shops empty.

One thousand towns and cities were studied, and 196,000 shops surveyed.

Today, Hartlepool officials said they were “swimming against the tide” because their town centre was having to compete with major rivals such as Teesside Park, the MetroCentre and internet shopping.

Mayor Stuart Drummond said: “We can showcase Hartlepool to any retailer that might want to come here, and we can try to incentivise people.

“We keep trying as a council, but it is ultimately down to commercial decisions which are out of our hands.

“People are a lot more mobile these days and go to the MetroCentre and Teesside Park.

“Internet shopping also makes it difficult, but not just in Hartlepool. I think we are swimming against the tide.”

He said the results of the study did not “make for great reading”, but he added: “I am not particularly surprised.

“I think everyone knows we are suffering from a lot of empty properties in the town centre. I have been heading a group looking at empty buildings, not just shops, with varying levels of success. We are trying to work with the owners of the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre to look at ways of attracting some of the high street retailers into town.

“But it is proving difficult in the current economic climate.”

Pam Hargreaves, who chairs the town branch of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “We appreciate the difficulty that the local authority and Hartlepool has in attracting bigger retailers.

“But I think there is scope to look at how Hartlepool could develop a unique offer.

“We could encourage more individual traders and retailers. We want to build on the success of the indoor market scheme and a bigger promotion of Buy Local.

“We want more work undertaken with local businesses to help support them in a difficult and challenging time.”

Matthew Hopkinson, director at the Local Data Company, said: “The stark reality is that Great Britain has too many shops in the wrong locations and of the wrong size.”

Starbucks plans to triple its China coffee shops

SINGAPORE (AP) — Starbucks Corp., the world’s largest coffee retailer, plans to triple its coffee shops in China during the next four years and step up expansion elsewhere in Asia, an executive said Tuesday.

Starbucks plans to operate 1,500 outlets in China by 2015 from a current 470, the company’s Asia Pacific president Jinlong Wang said. The company also expects to open 700 coffee shops in South Korea by 2016, up from 370 now, Wang said.

“The coffee industry in China has huge potential,” Wang told reporters in Singapore. “China has 5,000 years as a tea-drinking country, but we’ve created a new coffee culture.”

Starbucks is eyeing fast-growing emerging economies to help boost sales. The company said in July that revenue from its international business rose 20 percent in the April-June quarter from a year earlier and accounted for 23 percent of overall sales of $2.93 billion.

Wang said Starbucks sales in Asia have remained robust in recent months despite a slowing global economy.

“We’ve seen very strong same store sales across Asia, double digit growth in some markets,” he said.

Starbucks, which has 17,000 stores in 55 countries, plans to introduce its Via Ready Brew instant coffee this month to South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Australia.

Since opening its first store in China in 1999, Starbucks has spread to 42 cities, including 10 new ones this year. Starbucks is preparing to open its first outlets in India next year and in Vietnam in 2013, Wang said.
